Congrats to the
Celtics and
Panthers for winning
the NBA and NHL titles respectively. They both add to the
long history of teams going up 3-0 in their series and ultimately
winning, no matter the different paths to get there.
As for the champ scores, Boston moves
back into the top 5 after a nadir for the past few years.
Miami gets up to number 6. The only
consolation for any Los Angeles
team fans who had to watch their Boston counterparts get another
championship is that their city is still, barely, on top of
the rankings. The margin is so small though that either the
MLS or WNBA seasons
could easily tip the balance between LA and
Kansas City.
With the first back-to-back Super Bowls in nearly 20 years,
The Chiefs'
have propelled Kansas City to their all time high in terms of
local team success, surpassing the previous mark set last year.
KC still is sitting at only 3rd place on the Champ list, behind
Tampa and Los Angeles, who both have had multiple teams
contribute to their champ scores. As great as the Chiefs have
been, neither the
Royals nor
Sporting KC have made any
serious playoff runs, and it is
hard to make it to the top of the Champ list only based on
the strength of one team, dynasty or not.
On the other side of the coin,
San Francisco
edges themselves into the top 5 on the strength of this
Super Bowl
run and their prior
Warriors
championship.
They obviously were hoping for more, but the
49ers are already
listed as the Super Bowl favorites for next season, so perhaps
their window is just opening.
The Columbus Crew beat
LAFC by a score of 2-1
in the MLS Cup, and have won the final
championship of the calendar year. This is the Crew's
2nd MLS Cup in 4 years,
and 3rd overall,
and brings the city of Columbus
to their all-time high ranking on the Champ list, 15th.
While LAFC did not end up winning the MLS Cup, their runner
up finish was enough to pad
Los Angeles' lead in the overall
Champ list and maintain their spot as the #1 sports city.
Congrats to the Texas Rangers,
who are now the third franchise in a row to win their first
championship, ending the 62-year drought that started in
1961 when they joined the MLB.
With the Rangers' World Series
win, the city of Dallas moves all the way
up to #7 on the champ list, and breaks their 11 year and 46
season drought.
Nothing changes at the top of the champ list though, as neither
the Dodgers nor Rays had enough of a postseason run to alter
the order of #1 and #2. Of note if you think the streak of
first-time winners is going
to continue for the NFL, then the
Super Bowl winner
would need to be one of the (roughly in current SB odds):
Bills,
Bengals,
Lions,
Browns,
Jags,
Chargers,
Falcons,
Vikings,
Titans,
Texans,
Panthers,
or
Cardinals.
The odds get pretty long after the first 6, but certainly
a realistic chance for those teams.
