Congrats to the Texas Rangers,
who are now the third franchise in a row to win their first
championship, ending the 62-year drought that started in
1961 when they joined the MLB.
With the Rangers' World Series
win, the city of Dallas moves all the way
up to #7 on the champ list, and breaks their 11 year and 46
season drought.
Nothing changes at the top of the champ list though, as neither
the Dodgers nor Rays had enough of a postseason run to alter
the order of #1 and #2. Of note if you think the streak of
first-time winners is going
to continue for the NFL, then the
Super Bowl winner
would need to be one of the (roughly in current SB odds):
Bills,
Bengals,
Lions,
Browns,
Jags,
Chargers,
Falcons,
Vikings,
Titans,
Texans,
Panthers,
or
Cardinals.
The odds get pretty long after the first 6, but certainly
a realistic chance for those teams.
Congrats to the Nuggets,
who took 47 seasons to win their
first championship, and the
Golden Knights,
who took 6.
With the NBA and NHL seasons ending in back-to-back days, we
enter a long gap between the next time the champ score will update,
IE the dog days of summer. Thus the leaderboard will remain as follows
for quite a while:
Denver creeps into the
top 3 with their 3rd
title since 2015, and Vegas rounds out
the top 10 with their new Stanley Cup.
LA remains in the top spot with a
little more breathing room as
the Lakers playoff run
outpaced what the Lightning
were able to accomplish.
But given that
Tampa and Los Angeles both have highly relevant baseball teams,
the top spot will likely be very much up for grabs
during the MLB playoffs.
If you want to get into the top 3 sports cities, winning 2 Super Bowls in 4 years is a good way to do it. With the
@Chiefs
win this year, KC rockets up to the #3 city in our champs rankings, and the city records its all-time high in terms of local team success.
On the other side of the coin, Philadephia now is the only city to lose 3 championship finals (Eagles, Union & Phillies) in the same year – and they've done it twice. But in 1980, Philly offset their 3 losses in championships (76ers, Eagles & Flyers) with a Phillies World Series win, so it wasn't all bad. No such luck in 2022.
Our last update of 2022 is a consequential one, as due to @LAFC's thrilling MLS Cup victory, Los Angeles has just barely edged ahead of Tampa Bay and taken the top spot in the Champ Score rankings. The razor tight margin will be tested in just a few short months as Tampa Bay and LA teams both try to accumulate more points with a deep run in the NFL playoffs.
